Imbolc
Gaelic word possibly meaning “in the belly”. Pronounced “im” like Tim, and “bolc” like folk, slightly silent b, is the liminal space between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. It’s still very much Wintertime, but with a dash of extra daylight in the evening - a small taste of Spring stirring life within. As a butterfly just after emerging from its cocoon. Before fluttering away to dance with the flowers, a butterfly must rest and allow their wings to dry. And so it is with the Imbolc portal.
It’s been about 6 years that I’ve been learning the old ways of my Irish ancestors. Watching the lunar cycles and observing nature through the lens of the great turning of The Perpetual Celtic Calendar, or Wheel of the Year. I traveled to Ireland and explored ancient cairns, holy wells, caves, and sacred sites, learning about Fairy and Celtic folklore with Woodland Bard and Tree Labyrinth Keeper, John Wilmott. I’ve read some books too, many essays, but watching nature and the cosmos has been the best teacher, and I am grateful to be able to do so in place that experiences 8 very distinct seasons - Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn and the portals between each season, the ancient agricultural celebrations of Samhain, Imbloc, Beltane, and Lughnasadh.
Wherever you happen to be in the world though, in whichever climate, there are lessons to be learned by observing the natural world around you.
With each turning, new lessons come and it is my honor to steward seasonal live gatherings for all who wish to commune with and learn from the natural world in this way. Hosting them with my witchy sister Asa Angel is an extra special blessing, so I’m excited to share that we will be collaborating on the upcoming Imbolc live gathering -
